The Path of the Anacondas Initiative

The Amazon Rainforest has been recognized as a key ecosystem for the regulation of the planet as a system, and we have come to identify its vulnerability, and resilience. In times when humanity is in search for convincing strategies to tackle climate change and to maintain the conditions of the planet that enable our diverse ways of living, this region of the planet becomes key for the threats the planet is facing as a whole. The Amazon, because of its exuberance, its diversity, its vulnerability and its life-renewing cycles, is a perfect scenario for the understanding of our planet’s thresholds, tipping points, resilience, generosity and thriving for life, and the role of the human species in its maintenance. In that sense, the connectivity of the Amazon with its neighboring ecosystems and regions is what will guarantee the continuance of the functioning and offering of the environmental services they provide.

The creation of this ecological-cultural corridor is then an opportunity to do so. In a few words, if we lose the Amazon, we lose the fight against global Climate Change.

The Path of the Anacondas Initiative aims to re-establish ecosystem connectivity, to guarantee environmental services of the Amazon basin and seek innovative solutions to Climate Change, creating the world’s largest eco-cultural corridor: Andes-Amazon-Atlantic. This connectivity is fundamental for climate stability, the water cycle, biodiversity, planetary resilience, and human wellbeing. The initiative promotes the articulation between indigenous people, local populations, productive sectors, organizations and governments, enabling a re-thinking of our participation in the natural system that sustains us. The corridor aims to energize an integral vision, articulating all political, social, economic and cultural dimensions, in a participatory and inclusive way.

The region comprises a central column of some 135 million hectares, of which 80% is Protected Areas and Indigenous Territories. This mosaic of Protected Areas and Indigenous Territories covers 134 million hectares, and forms the core potential area for inclusion in the Andes-Amazonia-Atlantic Corridor. Beyond the existing mosaic of Protected Areas and Indigenous Territories, the three countries have suggested policies for conservation and sustainable management for the region of the North of the Amazon River. For instance, Colombia is seeking to protect buffer zones around its Protected Areas using a flexible figure of special management corridors. In Brazil the north of the Amazon River is seen as an area of conservation and sustainable development. In Venezuela, 75% of the state of Amazonas has been declared as protected areas, and 85% of the population is indigenous.

Nevertheless, if it is considered more attractive as a laboratory for new and innovative environmental, social, and economical proposals, many adjacent territories could be included. In this way, the corridor could include the entire region located north of the Amazon River, approximately 200 million hectares. It could also include other countries such as Guyana, Surinam, French Guyana and Peru, which have informally expressed their interest in participating.

The countries within the region share national and international legal frameworks and commitments for conservation, sustainable development and human rights. Such are the shared ratification of international conventions relating to the environment and indigenous communities, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity, the ILO Convention 169, and the Río Agreements, among others. These countries have also signed a series of multinational and bi-national cooperation agreements for the environmental, social and economic management of the Amazon basin, many of them within the framework of the OTCA (Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization). There exists multiple social and environmental initiatives promoted by governments, civil society and international cooperation. Faced by the need to take action on climate change, the Colombian government has committed to implement the initiative in its territory, and is calling on other countries in the region to do the same. Further, there is a growing critical mass of civil society in favor.

Evert Eriksson

<div>
Evert Eriksson (°1986) is a sustainability adviser at Flanders Audiovisual Fund. Within the context of VAF’s e-Mission project, he guides Flemish film crews to produce their films and series in a more sustainable way. He has a master degree in industrial engineering (Ghent) and environmental sciences (Antwerp) and has worked for three year as a researcher in the agricultural sector where he mainly focused on energy saving in greenhouse horticulture.

David Parfitt

David has worked as an independent film, TV and theatre producer for over 25 years.  His film credits include Henry V, Peter's Friends, Much Ado About Nothing, The Madness of King George (nominated for four Academy Awards), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Twelfth Night, The Wings Of The Dove (nominated for four Academy Awards), Shakespeare In Love (winner of Seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and four British Academy Awards including Best Film), Gangs of New York, (Production Consultant), I Capture the Castle, Chasing Liberty and A Bunch of Amateurs.  In 2010 he produced My Week with Marilyn (nominated for two Academy Awards) followed by Tom Stoppard’s award-winning adaptation of Parade’s End for BBC and HBO in 2011. In 2013 David produced The Wipers Times (winner of The Broadcasting Press Guild Award for Best Single Drama).  Most recently he produced the BBC4 documentary Glyndebourne: The Untold History and is currently in production with the ground-breaking feature animation Loving Vincent, telling the story of the tempestuous life and mysterious death of Vincent Van Gogh. David established Trademark Films in 2000 with other members of his regular production team. He was Chairman of BAFTA 2008-10 and is currently Chairman of Film London.

Iván Trujillo Bolio

Iván Trujillo Bolio studied at the Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos (CUEC) in Mexico City. As a director, he devoted himself mainly to documentaries about the environment. Director General of the film library of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) from 1989 to 2009, and president of the International Federation of Film Archives from 1999 to 2003, he is now head of the International Film Festival of Guadalajara.

Jeremy Mathieu

Jeremy Mathieu works as a Sustainable Production Advisor at the BBC, and a consultant/trainer in sustainability for the media industry. He helps production teams across all genres to understand and reduce the environmental impact of their work by implementing the Albert and Albert+ processes, as well as teaching the Carbon Literacy training course, all part of the tools provided by the BAFTA Albert Consortium.

Manu Kumaran

Kumaran is a second-generation international film producer who has produced 19 feature films in four languages. The oldest son of renowned Malayalam film director-producer K P Kumaran, he has been engaged in the film business from an early age, working primarily in production and distribution. Kumaran joined the Interpublic group agency Lintas in 1993 and quickly rose to become the youngest VP in the history of Indian advertising. In 1998, he produced “Bombay Boys”, a movie that altered the landscape of Indian cinema forever. The film opened a new market for alternative cinema, bringing it into the mainstream. In 2002, Kumaran established Medient and created ABOB, India's first boy band. He later leveraged ABOB’s success to produce “Kiss Kis Ko (Who Gets the Kiss?”), a film based on the band's life. In 2008, he produced the award-winning Malayalam film “Aakashagopuram”, based on the Henrik Ibsen play “Master Builder”), which was the first Indian film to be entirely produced outside of that country. The film set a new benchmark in East-West collaboration within the industry. The first Indian producer to successfully produce films in Hollywood for western audience, Kumaran has produced films like ‘Yellow’ (Siena Miller, Ray Liotta), directed by Nick Cassavetes (‘The Notebook’, ‘The Other Woman’), ‘Storage 24’, a British horror film starring BAFTA winner Noel Clarke (‘Doctor Who’, ’Star Trek’).  Kumaran is an expert in film tax credits and incentives and has built a reputation for producing theatrical quality releases at minimal costs with strong net margins.

Nevina Satta

Nevina Satta is the CEO of Sardegna Film Commission and the Vice-President of the Italian Film Commission Association (IFC). She's currently Board member of Cineregio, the EU network of Regional Film Funds and lives in Italy. Born in Sardinia, she got her Philosophy degree and PhD in Cultural-Media Studies and Visual Anthropology in Milan, where she began her career as Filmmaker and Producer. Before returning to her homeland after twenty years, she was based in Los Angeles for ten, developing and producing narrative features and documentaries. She works as consultant of International Film Festivals and as architect of training initiatives (including Locarno Film Festival for 18 years, African Asian Latin American Film Festival of Milan, etc). She has founded with her husband the Unicef-endorsed "TravelingFilmSchool", a non-profit organization that provides free film and theater training to children in underdeveloped regions around the world and they developed the FairTradeCinema Protocol. She's specializing on Sustainability in the Creative Industries and Audiovisual Industry Funds and Institutions.

Former student of the Ecole Normale Supérieure, Olivier-René Veillon used to be studies manager at SOFRES before working at La Compagnie Générale de Vidéocommunication as an adviser. He then became the executive director of TV Sport (Eurosport France), the first thematic multilingual channel. He took part in the creation of Arte as Communication, Development and Business Director of la Sept-Arte and then became Managing Director of its subsidiary ARTE/VIDEO. As the Chief Representative of TV France International, he was in charge of the promotion of French audiovisual programmes on the international market. International director of Téléimages group and Deputy Director of MK2, Olivier-René Veillon is now the director of the public structure “The Ile de France Film Commission”. Olivier-René Veillon also teaches at the “Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Paris” (top French management school) and at the Ibero-american University of Mexico. He wrote several essays on visual arts and cinema, including “The American Cinema”.

Chris Foot

Chairman of the Kenya Film Commission, passionate about film and television, a former lawyer who has worked in television and radio in Kenya. He has played a pivotal role in producing audiovisual incentives, promoting the regional film and television industry and establishing training programs. Asides from film he sits on numerous business and NGO boards involved in farming, real estate, tourism, conservation, education, agriculture and real estate.

Slater Jewell-Kemker

Youngest ever graduate of the prestigious Canadian Film Centre Directors Lab, Slater Jewell-Kemker has been making movies since she was six. An award-winning filmmaker and climate activist, Slater has been featured by Forbes twice: once for her ongoing environmental documentary AN INCONVENIENT YOUTH, a film that’s followed the rise of the global youth climate movement over the past eight years, and more recently for her CFC short film STILL. A short film that explores infatuation and domestic violence, STILL premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival and was chosen as part of Canada's Top Ten, landing her in Hollywood Reporterʼs Next Gen as one of 15 filmmakers under 30 to watch.  She lives on a farm with her dog Rheya, where she keeps bees.

Truls Kontny

Truls Kontny is film director, producer, and Head of Film Commission Norway. Currently, he also serves as President of Scandinavian Locations, President of EUropean Film Commissioners Network and Chairman of the board at Film Fra Sør.

About Film4Climate

Description

Film4Climate is a global initiative committed to developing a concrete plan to mitigate the environmental impact of film production as well as raising awareness about climate change. The objective is two-fold: One--unify the film industry under one globally recognized standard for sustainable productions; and two--develop a global commitment from industry signatories who pledge to meet the standard, reduce the environmental impact, and participate in encouraging climate change awareness and action.

To do this, we will establish a network of knowledge partners representing the industry’s practitioners and associations (e.g. Film Institutes, Film Commissions, Studios, Production Companies, and International Film Festivals). The partners will work together to share insights, experiences, and practical tools to achieve the goals. 
 
We aim to share the results with an international audience during events taking place at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris, France, from November 30 - December 11. 
 
Several excellent templates have been devised by studios in the USA and Europe along with self-regulating, free software that allows producers to establish the projected carbon footprint for the production of the upcoming venture, based on scripts, breakdowns, and schedules. Signing up for the program allows the subscriber to enter the actual data during the production to learn if it is possible to reduce the overall carbon footprint by the end of the process

The youth day will host a number of youth-focused events throughout the day, placing youth at the heart of the climate talks. Connect4Climate has contributed in creating a dynamic and engaging program.

Why does climate change education matter?

Description

As the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change says in Article 6, education contributes to the solutions being developed to respond to the challenges and opportunities presented by climate change.

“The solutions to climate change are also the paths to a safer, healthier, cleaner and more prosperous future for all. To see this and to understand what needs to be done requires a sharp and sustained focus on education, training and public awareness in all countries and at all levels of government, society and enterprise.”

Key points on why climate change education matters:

- Long-term, independent records from weather stations, satellites, ocean buoys, tide gauges, and many other data sources all confirm that our nation, like the rest of the world, is warming. Scientists who study climate change confirm that these observations are consistent with significant changes in Earth’s climatic trends. (U.S. National Climate Assessment, 2014)

- Over the 21st century, climate scientists expect Earth’s temperature to continue increasing, very likely more than it did during the 20th century. Two anticipated results are rising global sea level and increasing frequency and intensity of heat waves, droughts, and floods. The #Youth4Climate social media campaign is an effort led by the <a href="http://www.noaa.gov/" target="_blank">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)</a>, the <a href="http://energy.gov/" target="_blank">U.S. Department of Energy</a>, the <a href="http://www.astc.org/" target="_blank">Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC)</a>, the <a href="http://cleanet.org/clean/community/index.html" target="_blank">CLEAN Network</a>, <a href="http://www.wildcenter.org/" target="_blank">The Wild Center</a>, the World Bank Group’s global partnership program Connect4Climate, <a href="http://www.climategen.org/" target="_blank">Climate Generation: A Will Steger Legacy</a>, <a href="https://acespace.org/" target="_blank">Alliance for Climate Education</a>, <a href="http://www.earthday.org/" target="_blank">Earth Day Network</a>, <a href="https://www.climateinteractive.org/" target="_blank">Climate Interactive</a>, and others. Young people are one of the largest demographics in the world — more than one billion youth roam the globe today. Climate education is now a necessary foundation for those young people. In order to tackle the complex issue of climate change, we need leaders with the skills, knowledge, and passion to push for, and innovate solutions.

With their knowledge, young people are already the leaders of this generation. They are already demanding ambitious action on climate change and leading a youth climate movement. The #Youth4Climate coalition is supporting them all the way on the road to and through Paris.

For a month, from November 12 until December 12 2015, we’re calling on young people to share their climate solutions, tell their climate stories, and engage in the UNFCCC COP21.

November 30-December 11: The Window into Paris: COP21 #EducatorsinParis initiative of  Climate Generation: A Will Steger Legacy will be sending out daily digests that include blogs by their staff and teacher delegation to Paris, and information on how to connect to daily webcasts hosted by teachers connecting back to their classrooms, which will also be open to the public. Climate Generation will be bringing the position statements of hundreds of students and public to share with the U.S. delegation.  Climate Generation will also host daily informal “cafe roundtables” with experts in Paris (<a href="http://www.climategen.org/cop21">www.climategen.org/cop21</a>).

December 3: The Young and Future’s Generation Day at the UNFCCC COP21 (<a href="http://unfccc.int/meetings/paris_nov_2015/meeting/8926/php/view/seors.p…;) will host a number of youth-focused events throughout the day, placing youth at the heart of the climate talks. Join with #ParisACE for #COP21

December 3: In the middle of the day young leaders will join their older counterparts on the Intergenerational Inquiry official side-event of the UNFCCC. This is followed by a special screening of “An Inconvenient Youth” (<a href="http://www.aninconvenientyouth.com/">http://www.aninconvenientyouth.com…;), a film documenting the vibrant untold story of the global youth climate movement by Slater Jewell-Kemker, a young Canadian.

December 3: During an international interactive video conference organizing a dialogue between youth and experts on concrete plans for their communities and youth and education leaders can ask their questions at the Universcience the science center in Paris on December 3rd by using hashtag #WorldCOP21.

December 4: UN Alliance Call to Action: There is an urgent need to scale-up action and investment in climate change education, training, and awareness raising. This high-level event showcases innovative ways of effectively engaging all stakeholder in this transformation. Panelists will include representatives from Earth Day Network and Connect4Climate, discussing recent climate education and communication initiatives. In the evening the #Day4Climate filmmakers and UNFCCC videographers will be celebrated at a youth reception with a special presentation by Prince Ea.

December 4: World Climate Project: Interactive Simulation of UN Climate Negotiations. In the Climate Generations Area from 11:30-13:00, Climate Interactive will offer a chance to explore potential pathways to address climate change through an interactive demonstration of the World Climate game and computer simulations C-ROADS and En-ROADS. Put yourself in the shoes of the climate negotiators to see what it will take. Analysis of the INDC pledges will be offered alongside a framework for understanding how climate solutions can and must address other challenges simultaneously. Engaging Youth from London to Jakarta

Description

More than ever, we need young people involved in creating sustainable cities. This can be achieved by establishing and strengthening networks that provide opportunities for young aspiring entrepreneurs and innovators to get involved and learn from like-minded groups of individuals on a global scale.<o:p></o:p>

For example, the World Bank’s Connect4Climate partnered with the New Cities Foundation to host a youth innovation contest called the <a href="http://www.newcitiesfoundation.org/the-jakarta-urban-challenge/" target="_blank">Jakarta Urban Challenge</a>. The aim of the event was to challenge students and entrepreneurs from Indonesia to find tangible solutions that improve mobility in Jakarta while simultaneously lowering GHG emissions. Jakarta is one of the most heavily congested cities and is the largest urban area in the world not to have a metro or subway system in place. It’s estimated that the local economy loses around <a href="http://www.siemens.com/innovation/en/home/pictures-of-the-future/infras…; target="_blank">$3 billion USD a year</a> due to traffic congestion resulting from the city’s rapidly rising rate of vehicle ownership.<o:p></o:p>

The Jakarta Urban Challenge drew almost 250 submissions in just two months, with each entry offering a different approach to solving the issue. During an award ceremony, a panel of industry experts awarded the first place title to “Squee”—a mobile application that aims to unify pedestrians and cyclists to map the safest pathways around the city, encouraging more sustainable methods of transport.

Squee Mobile App won the Jakarta Urban Challenge, with Governor Ahok of Jakarta, Muhammad Yunus of Grameen Bank and John Rossant of New Cities Foundation.<o:p></o:p>

When used at a large scale, the app will encourage social interaction between pedestrians and, as a result, help form communities of travellers. The three finalists were awarded US $20,000 to help them develop their innovations.<o:p></o:p>

Additionally, hackathons can foster collaboration by bringing together creative designers, experts, and developers to produce innovative solutions. One example is <a href="http://www.worldbank.org/en/news/feature/2014/02/03/hackathons-tech-sav…; target="_blank">Code for Resilience</a>—a series of hackathons organized by the World Bank and civil society organizations that engage young people to build urban resilience in Asia by “hacking”.<o:p></o:p>

Over 1,000 software and hardware developers participated in 11 hackathon events across nine countries. The events resulted in prototypes and tools that address a series of disaster resilience challenges discussed during community workshops.  As simple as an app may seem, the collective effort required to develop these kinds of initiatives can help catalyse and leverage user-driven innovation on a larger scale.<o:p></o:p>

Similarly, the <a href="http://www.london.gov.uk/priorities/environment/mayors-low-carbon-entre…; target="_blank">Mayor of London’s Low Carbon Entrepreneur</a> competition challenges students to propose tangible ideas and concepts for lowering carbon emissions from buildings. A £20,000 development fund supports the winning proposals through implementation and provides finalists with training and mentorship. The challenge is now in its third year and has helped hundreds of students and recent graduates learn the basic principles of starting a business—giving students the opportunity to test their innovative ideas and produce real impact on the ground.<o:p></o:p>

Scaling Up Local Solutions for Global Impact

Description

“Urban challenges” are becoming powerful tools for crowdsourcing solutions from young people on a range of pressing issues—from urban resilience to energy efficiency. However, the missing link is connecting all these aspiring entrepreneurs and social innovators on a single platform where they can share experiences and knowledge, and collaborate with one another.<o:p></o:p>

One example of this kind of platform is Rockefeller Foundation’s <a href="http://www.100resilientcities.org/" target="_blank">100 Resilient Cities</a> initiative—a network that provides cities with resources for improving resilience to physical, social, and economic challenges. Although the 100 Resilient Cities program focuses exclusively on city governments, replicating this type of network for young innovators can be a powerful tool for scaling solutions from the bottom up.<o:p></o:p>

The Connect4climate program and others like it can help bridge that gap by creating an umbrella campaign for innovation, leveraging partners’ knowledge and experience to give opportunities for young innovators to turn their ideas into reality.<o:p></o:p>
