The world is more connected than ever. United we are addressing our generation’s challenge, climate change. We are all for the green, the green transition to a low-carbon resilient future. But this is only possible with a solid understanding of our climate system. That is why we are celebrating 30 years of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). (see full program)

The IPCC has been scrutinizing and collating all the published scientific work that has been done on climate change, issuing sober reports that reveal the vital evidence we need to work on protecting our lives and the planet we live on for future generations.

Last year, All4TheGreen gave the city of Bologna a real buzz with a hive of environmental activities leading up to the G7 Environment Ministers meetings. About 100 events around the city emphasized our need to find lasting solutions for environmental protection and the climate challenge, and highlighted the unstoppable momentum pushing for a low-carbon resilient future, that we are all for the green.
 
The IPCC event next week will be preceded by a screening of "Viaje a Los Pueblos Fumigados" with an introduction by the Argentinian director Fernando Solanas at the Cinema Lumière in Bologna on Saturday, February 24. The screening is presented in partnership with the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna as part of Connect4Climate’s Film4Climate initiative.
 
The program for Monday, February 26, includes discussions on Climate Knowledge for Action, linking Climate Action to Sustainable Development and the Role of the IPCC and its Future. Renowned speakers and leaders on climate science will inspire from Europe’s oldest University town, online through the Connect4Climate community, and the day will culminate with the special artistic performance “Cracking Danilo Rea”: a dialogue between man and technology created by artist Alex Braga, who works across music and concept art, and designed with Danilo Rea, one of the most influential piano improvisers worldwide.
 
The main proceedings will open at 10:30 am with introductory greetings from the Rector of the University of Bologna, Francesco Ubertini, IPCC President Hoesung Lee and Minister Gian Luca Galletti. At 11:30 am there will be a session on climate knowledge for an ambitious action, which will be attended by H.E. Deo Saran, Fiji’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium, Permanent Representative to the European Union and Special Envoy to UNFCCC. At 2:30 pm a panel on climate actions in favor of sustainable development is scheduled with the Director-General of the Ministry of the Environment, Francesco La Camera, and the president of the WWF Italia, Donatella Bianchi, taking the floor. At 4:00 pm the panel on IPCC looking at a low-carbon future and, at 6:45 pm, the live concert of Danilo Rea and Alex Braga.
 
 
 
Open to all, the proceedings will aim to increase awareness among the public - and above all the young - on climate change and to stimulate a new generation of scientists to continue their efforts to uncover and share widely the best possible research and analysis for climate action.

University of Chicago & Karnataka Government launch Bengaluru Innovation Challenge

The University of Chicago and the Urban Development Department of the Government of Karnataka launched the Bengaluru Innovation Challenge—an effort to improve air and water quality by crowdsourcing inventive ideas from citizens, civic leaders, academics, corporations, and other institutions across India.
 
The Challenge winners will receive funding support of up to Rs. 1.5 crore over two years to implement and test their ideas in the field, with guidance and input from the Government of Karnataka and leading faculty at the University of Chicago. If successful, these ideas could become policy solutions the government could implement on a large scale and may provide a valuable model for other cities to follow.
 
Launching the Bengaluru Innovation Challenge, Shri. K.J. George, Hon’ble Minister for Bengaluru Development and Town Planning, said, “Bengaluru is the engine of growth of Karnataka, and I am glad to announce this competition here. This Challenge collects ideas from the community, from the people who live and work here and know this city and its problems best and I think that’s a very interesting way of looking for solutions.”

The Challenge is a project of the Tata Centre for Development (TCD) at UChicago and the Urban Development Department of the Government of Karnataka, in partnership with the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago’s India team (EPIC-India) and UChicago Energy and Environment Lab.
 
“The answers to the problems that modern cities face today are often found hidden by those with unique on-the-ground knowledge,” says Michael Greenstone, the Milton Friedman Professor in Economics and director of EPIC and TCD. “This challenge presents a fantastic opportunity not just for the government and University of Chicago, but for students, researchers and innovative thinkers across India to share their novel ideas for solving the real energy and environmental problems of Bengaluru.”
 
The challenge, which is now receiving letters of interest, will screen applications over the next six months before announcing the winners in the fall of 2018.

“We’re excited to be partnering with the Karnataka government on this ground-breaking approach to identifying, refining, testing and scaling up new policy solutions proven to work,” says Anna Agarwal, Associate Director, Urban Innovation, UChicago Energy & Environment Lab. “Testing the ideas in advance ensures not only that the policy is designed to be successful, but also that it can be effectively scaled up and implemented.”
 
The Bengaluru Innovation Challenge builds on an earlier challenge that took place in Delhi in 2015-16 in partnership with the Delhi government. In that challenge, three winners were chosen from nearly 250 ideas from citizens, students, researchers, entrepreneurs, non-profit and for-profit organizations from across India and around the world.

UNDP and FAO launch toolkit on building climate resilience in agriculture

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) joined last year to launch an online course on climate change and agriculture. The six-week course in partnership with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) featured leading global experts on climate change, finance, agriculture, and communications. The Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on National Adaptation Plans: Building Climate Resilience in Agriculture happened in parallel with the 23rd Conference of the Parties (COP23) in Bonn, Germany.

The joint UNDP-FAO Integrating Agriculture in National Adaptation Plans (NAP-Ag) Programme supports partner countries to identify and integrate climate adaptation measures for the agricultural sectors into relevant national planning and budgeting processes. The programme is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), through its International Climate Initiative (IKI).
 
The learning materials are now presented as part of the joint effort between all parties involved in the MOOC.

  Module 1: Introduction to climate change adaptation, agriculture and food security
 
Module 1 highlights the interlinkages between climate change and agriculture and the importance of adaptation planning for ensuring food security and sustainable development. This Module sets the scene for the course by introducing fundamental concepts and terminology. It features case studies and examples that highlight differentiated impacts of climate change impacts on gender in agriculture and on migration. Module 1 also presents key international developments such as the Paris Agreement, including the Nationally Determined Contributions, the 2030 Agenda and the Sendai framework, National Adaptation Plans and how they relate.

Module 2 introduces the NAP process and the NAP-Ag Programme. Module 2 presents the LEG Technical Guidelines on NAP and the critical elements of the NAP process. Attention is paid to the importance of the NAPs’ alignment with the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This module also introduces the “Addressing agriculture, forestry, and fisheries in National Adaptation Plans – Supplementary guidelines” developed by FAO. Country experiences from Uruguay and Zambia on the integration of agriculture in NAPs are presented.

This module also introduces interactive tools and approaches for modeling climate change impact on agriculture, measuring impact and mainstreaming gender into adaptation planning. Finally, the module provides insights into the mechanics of designing a climate change adaptation project.

It provides valuable insights associated with national budgeting, as well as an overview of a range of options for financing adaptation action for agriculture and agriculture-based livelihoods, e.g., the use of climate/weather risk insurance mechanisms.

Module 6 reflects on the 4th final element of the National Adaptation Plans guidelines (Element D – Reporting, Monitoring, and Review) and presents the processes of setting up effective adaptation M&E systems for the agriculture sector, which can feed into NAP processes. One of the tools shown is impact evaluation. The module also introduces the role of outreach and communications for enhancing the project objectives and provides an overview of the steps and best practices of building and implementing effective communications strategy.

The plight of Syrian refugees has been dominating news headlines for many months now. Every social media platform broadcasts haunting images of their sad fate, especially those of women and children, who inevitably suffer the most. Feeling sorry for them is no longer the solution, and it is imperative that each and every member of civil society takes steps to alleviate their suffering as they have every right to a life of dignity like all of us.

The youth organization, Green Hope Foundation, believes in turning words into action and we decided to bring smiles to the faces of Syrian refugee children living in camps in Lebanon close to the border. We wanted this New Year to be very special for these children and with the help of our members collected a large consignment of clothes, woolens, books, flasks, and toys. A five member Green Hope team flew to Lebanon in the first week of January with this consignment and visited camps housing the Syrian refugees. Green Hope works on Education for Sustainable Development, and we try and reach out to all sections of civil society with our message so that "no one is left behind" as we march towards sustainability. Our main objective was to engage and educate the Syrian refugee children on environmental conservation as we believe that every child has a right to education. Through our workshops and other activities we wanted to engage, educate and empower them so that they too become a part of the sustainable development process and start taking actions within their zones of influence.

Over a two day period, we conducted six environmental workshops with each workshop targeting a specific age group. Several hundred children ranging in age from 7 to 18 attended our workshops. This was their first exposure to conservation issues, and their enthusiasm was limitless. We educated them about global warming, the impacts of climate change, the UN Environment’s “Beat Pollution” campaign, the need to go “plastic free," how tree planting reduces the carbon footprint impact and the need to recycle and reuse so that they could reduce wastage in their camps and do “more with less”. Our workshops were extremely interactive, and we used music, songs, art, and quiz to communicate with the children. Each group painted their dreams of the future on white T-shirts that we gave them, and their ideas and expressions were truly amazing. After each activity we distributed prizes in the form of books, toys, flasks, woolens, and clothes that we had carried with us and their joyous smiles lit up the room. Since their camps are without electricity for most of the day, we also distributed solar rechargeable lamps which would enable them to study at night. After each activity, the children would break into an impromptu dance, and we joined in with them, sharing the moment. Despite being from different parts of the world, we became one thus proving the universal nature of humanity. After attending the workshops, the children said that they would organize a cleanup campaign in their camps once the rains stopped. They also planned to plant trees within their camps soon. All the attendees wrote down action pledges on handprint cutouts which they put up on a “tree of hope.”

Our efforts were only a drop in the ocean of their misery, but we left vindicated that we were able to bring momentary joy in the lives of a few hundred children. We also planted the seed of environmental action in their hearts, and some of them would take the cause of sustainability forward within their zones of influence. A dream of a sustainable world can become a reality only if all sections of civil society, especially the marginalized sections are involved, and Green Hope will continue to reach out to them and empower them so that together we get “The Future We Want.”

Urgency and Unity central at Fiji-led Climate Conference

The inspiring slogan of the UN Climate Change conference CCOP23 “Uniting for Climate Action – Further Faster Together” still reverberates in my daily thoughts. The World Bank Group partnered with the Fijian Presidency, the German hosts and numerous partners to spread the message of unity, and the urgent need to increase ambition and action.

The World Bank Group pavilion featured more than thirty Facebook live interviews under the Uniting4Climate message, see the full recordings here. Climate solutions were discussed by global leaders, media and influencers and the program featured World Bank Group related work on transport, energy, forests and landscapes, gender, cities, education and much more. Lord Nicholas Stern emphasized that climate action is fundamentally about “sustainable growth,” largely achieved through investments in climate-smart infrastructure with the participation of the private sector.

On November 6, for the opening of COP23, Minister Inia Seruiratu of Fiji launched the pavilion program conversing with three Pacific Voices in Unison youth climate ambassadors from different Pacific nations. Minister Seruiratu, High-Level Climate Champion for COP23, emphasized that climate change affects all, not only the Pacific Islands, that “we are all in the same boat” with the aim of limiting warming to 1.5C degrees above pre-industrial levels. Key to climate action would be the leadership of young people as exemplified by the Pacific Voices in Unison, who shared their journeys of resilience in light of climate change with personal statements.

Youth leadership was celebrated around COP23 under the slogan: Youth Uniting4Climate Action – Further Faster Together. The World Bank’s Connect4Climate program partnered on the Youth Climate Action Awards to highlight that today’s youth are already feeling the impacts of climate change and they are the generation energized to find opportunities in climate action and building a low-carbon resilient future. My message to the youth audience was simple: “As we heard over this conference that the climate is changing rapidly, but that is actually our generation’s biggest opportunity. We are in the midst of a radical ecological and economic transformation that will shape our future and we are a part of the solution.”

Climate action is set to be one of our greatest opportunities, with an estimated investment of US$ 90 trillion in new infrastructure needed by 2030, according to the New Climate Economy. Much climate action is already taking place, and solutions were presented and promoted throughout the conference. The Momentum for Change Awards highlighted projects already supporting the achievement of the Paris Agreement, and the Climate Summit for Local and Regional Leaders emphasized action at the local scale.

COP23 emphasized the need for climate literacy to help train innovators and technology-developers for the green economy. James Close, Director of Climate Change, World Bank, highlighted: “We need to transform our society and our economy and we all have a role to play. Education gives us the opportunity to touch young minds and frame their thinking and problem-solving by giving them tools, evidence and data to come up with their own conclusions about what to do and how to do it.”

Numerous activities happening in parallel to COP23, such as Hack4Climate, Sustainable Innovation Forum, United for Efficiency and others, helped underline the need to connect, raise ambition, and support the advancement of solutions within everybody’s sphere of influence. This was also made clear to the public at the KlimaTour event hosted by the City of Bonn and at the Climate Planet exhibit promoted under the #Uniting4Climate hashtag.

Not only did we connect with audiences in Bonn, we also brought the voices and culture of Fiji to COP23 with two Fiji Live to COP23: Uniting for Climate Action broadcasts on the COP23 Facebook page during the high-level days, November 15 and 16. As a historical first the live shows were shown on all screens across the COP venues, including in the Plenary, and were watched more than 100,000 times. Hosted by Fiji’s Youth Climate Ambassador and Miss Pacific Islands, Anne Dunn, and featuring a special address by the Fijian President, George Konrote, the shows underscored the urgent need for the negotiations to support ambitious climate action.

“Guardians of Gaia” – Gaming for Climate Literacy Announced at COP23

Connect4Climate is partnering with Cube VR, an AR/VR design studio and strategic consultancy, to produce a multiplatform gaming experience entitled, “Guardians of Gaia”. The game, which will leverage AR and geo-location technologies, is slated to launch in Washington D.C. on Earth Day 2018 and continue at selected World Bank events through 2020 in what aims to be the first ongoing, multiplatform eco-game of its kind.
 
The concept was unveiled at the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP23) in Bonn, Germany by Kathleen Rogers, President of Earth Day Network and James Close, Director of Global Climate Change Operations at the World Bank Group.
 
“We’re progressing the development of this multi-platform augmented gaming experience that will spread climate knowledge and shift behavioral choices, and I have to say I’m extremely excited to see what comes out of that and how this can take us to a new level on this desperately important subject of climate change and education,” James Close told the delegates and visitors in a special session on Education Day.

As a keystone to the gaming experience, Cube VR will produce an interactive digital photo and film exhibit titled, “Journey to Gaia,” which will be directed and curated by Patricia Lanza, former Director of the Annenberg Space for Photography. Most recently, Patricia Lanza was nominated for Curator of the Year in 2015 by The Lucy Foundation for the acclaimed “Refugee” exhibit. In 2011, Lanza also oversaw creative direction for Exhibition of the Year-winner “Beauty Culture,” the documentary of which was also nominated for an Academy Award.
 
Cube VR partners, Larry Rosenthal and Blu Topalli, have developed and executed branded narrative experiences leveraging AR/VR, mobile platforms and other emerging technologies for clients including Apple, Sony, NBC Universal, and Hasbro Inc. This will be their first project for Connect4Climate, the World Bank Group’s global partnership program for the advancement of climate change awareness and the encouragement of climate solutions.
 
In 2015, Connect4Climate most notably coordinated the creative partnership to present Fiat Lux, a first of its kind projection-mapping experience utilizing the surface of the Vatican itself to bring climate issues to 100,000 people gathered in St. Peter’s Square and an estimated global reach of more than 4.4 billion viewers.
