Design4Climate Action at the Milan Design Week – addressing climate change through sustainability in design

A traveling media initiative led by the World Bank Group’s Connect4Climate program, April 17 – 22, 2018

Five years after its first engagement with the design industry the World Bank Group’s Connect4Climate global partnership program returns to Milan Design Week 2018 to highlight positive solutions.

Design underlines every physical object we know. As the world walks towards a new era of eco-friendliness, low-carbon, and sustainability, the “Design4Climate Action” weeklong series of events will engage diverse audiences to embrace climate-driven, sustainable design. Sustainable design is climate-smart, environmentally-friendly and socially responsible, often achieved through a circular-economy mindset that thrives on renewable resources, efficient construction, reduced waste, and healthy and productive environments.

On the occasion of the Milan Design Week 2018, from Tuesday 17th to Sunday 22nd April, Connect4Climate, the international program of the World Bank dedicated to communication on climate change, and LifeGate, the Italian media network promoting sustainability, partner with Material ConneXion Italia Salone del Mobile Milan, TVN Media Group and IULM University, to present the Design4Climate Action initiative.

Conceived as a traveling media zone, Design4Climate Action will be a digital collector and amplifier of sustainability information, and related content during Milan Design Week. The collaboration aims to maximize climate action by encouraging accelerated sustainable design practices throughout the design industry and the private sector as a whole.

Numerous hubs will be located throughout the city of Milan. During the day, Connect4Climate will host live interviews at the Lifegate space (Materials Village, inside Superstudio Più), featuring an engaging recording program, live interviews, editorial activities and social content. In the evening, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM, the Design4Climate Action program will continue at the exhibition "Living Nature“ designed by the international design and innovation firm Carlo Ratti Associati (CRA) and located in front of Palazzo Reale. "Living Nature" is a 500-square-meter area where the four seasons are represented and made to coexist. As described by Carlo Ratti, the "Living Nature" installation is a reflection of climate change and the impact they have on the concept of urban living - above all an invitation to the return of nature in the city.

Several itinerant media zones will also populate the Salone del Mobile and the streets of Milan, engaging experts, artists and citizens, and fostering the exchange of opinions and discussions on the theme of design and sustainability.

Transformation to a low-carbon, resilient future includes building sustainability into the very design of our cities, our houses, our clothes, our technology, and all the elements of our daily lives. Brilliant ideas, innovative solutions, and new designs come from every corner of the planet. Many will be presented in Milan during the week. How these contribute to promoting climate action, to building a low-carbon, resilient and sustainable future, will both surprise and excite those who attend.

Clim@ Competition 2018

clim@ is a competition for innovative businesses or projects in the fields of sustainable energy or resource efficiency that have the power to change current practices through innovative approaches to financing, new business models or novel concepts to raise awareness and mobilize new target groups to take climate action.

Apply for the competition

Outstanding applicants will be mentored by qualified experts, present their projects at a pitching event in Frankfurt and attend the GGF Sustainable Future Forum in June 2018, a gathering of 200 international stakeholders of the climate finance community organized by the Green for Growth Fund (GGF), where three grand finalists will pitch their projects to receive total EUR 30,000 in awards.

Who can apply?

Applications are open globally for any business or organisation that demonstrates a relevant track record with a business or project in the fields of sustainable energy or resource efficiency, such as:

established companies

experienced start-ups

non-governmental organizations (NGOs)

universities or research institutes

other relevant organisations

Entries should have a connection to the following themes:

renewable energy solutions

energy efficiency/conservation

sustainable use of resources: including improved water, waste and material management

Inspired by our mission and by the creative industries that we work with every day, we drafted a brief with six essential challenges:

1. Infinitely Connected: We have retained the outline of the C4C mark, which was originally developed with the “infinity sign” in mind to emphasize our growing community and engagements, aiming for infinite connections in support of climate action.

2. Elegantly Greened: We retained our green color scheme because we are uniting towards a more sustainable future characterized by more value and respect given to nature.

3. Globally Partnered: Only through our global partnerships and connections can we together address climate change.

4. Digitally Minded: Keeping the number “4” as a visual representation of “for” is in line with our emphasis on digital and multi-media for communications and across languages.

5. Cleanly Modernized: With clean, simple lines and Connect4Climate written in one line as a preference we aim to simplify and unify our look.

6. Variably Associated: Housed at The World Bank Group, Connect4Climate is designed to embrace partners, lead initiatives, support projects and advance campaigns.

Brand Assets

Brand assets have been carried forward from the legacy C4C mark, including the use of the “drop” from the top of the mark and the “square” as the center point of the mark. Connect4Climate also consistently uses the number “4” as a digital shorthand for the word “for” to underscore Connect4Climate’s modern, international and action-orientated perspective, that we are “all for climate action.”

Connect4Climate developed the “tree mark” to emphasize our environmental roots, our global outlook and our solutions-focused nature to building a sustainable low-carbon and resilient future. The growth of “leaves” using the Connect4Climate’s “drop” asset is used to support our fundamental belief that we need to re-green our world, that we are all for the green. The “Earth mark” is used consistently to highlight Connect4Climate’s global connections and Planet-orientated perspective.

CNMI Green Carpet Talent Competition 2018

The fashion event that rewards creativity and sustainability will take place in Milan on September 23rd, 2018, during the Milan Fashion Week.

The CNMI Green Carpet Talent Competition, supported by Value Retail Management and ICE-Agency for the promotion abroad and the internationalization of Italian companies, will take place on 23rd September at the Scala Theater in Milan during the Fashion Week (which will be held from September 19th until the 25th). For the occasion, the historic theater will be transformed into a garden of artisans, a creative and dreamlike place where at the same time you can admire the rigorously sustainable creations of young designers from all over the world.

The competition, in its second edition, after its 2017 success, challenges young creative people to redefine the concept of sustainability in fashion, within/for the Italian production chain and highlights the commitment of large companies and small producers to sustainability, heritage and authenticity.

"I am happy to announce the return of this initiative. Humanity has a limited window of time within which it can attain global objectives for fundamental issues such as climate change, poverty reduction and social justice. Along the path to be taken towards achieving this challenge there are many opportunities to be seized. The National Chamber of Italian Fashion has been committed for years to the definition of ambitious sustainability guidelines, which are the result of the commitment of the CNMI Commission on sustainability. The Commission is led by Gucci and its members are Giorgio Armani, Prada, Valentino, Versace and the 'Work on Sustainability Roundtable' created by CNMI in 2011."

"We often talk about the ecological footprint of the fashion products we produce, but a narrow view on the ecological issue does not take into account all the other facets that affect the creation of a truly sustainable supply chain. Speaking of fashion handprint we also need to include its social aspect, the sense of belonging and the cultural value that abounds in the Italian production chain anchored to a crafting model.“

The jury for this 2018 edition will be composed by Edward Enninful, Director of Vogue UK, Derek Blasberg, fashion editor at CNN Style, pop star and UN ambassador Ellie Goulding, Kelly Wong of Lane Crawford, Nathalie Kingham, Fashion and Buying director of MATCHESFASHION.COM, and Desiree Boiller, Chair of Value Retail Management alongside Livia Firth, Carlo Capasa and Sara Sozzani Maino.

From today, young creative people can register for the competition directly on the CNMI website, but only ten will be selected and will present their creations to the jury in Paris in the coming months. The five finalists of the competition, including the winner of the Franca Sozzani Prize GCC Emerging Designer, will participate in the 12-month mentoring program of The Bicester Village Shopping Collection by Value Retail. Working closely with experts in Europe and China, finalists will have the opportunity to tap into global expertise in various fields, including fashion, retail, supply chain management, customer information, brand creation, tourism, marketing and distribution, to help them fully express their creative and commercial potential.

Furthermore, the designers will be able to exhibit their collections through The Creative Spot, a platform dedicated to new talents at Fidenza Village, while the winner will have the opportunity to present the collection at the Milan Fashion Week in February 2019 with the support of CNMI.

The complete list of prizes to be awarded during the Green Carpet Fashion Awards Italy 2018 will be announced during the Venice Film Festival in August 2018.
