Rokia Traore becomes a Connect4Climate Global Leader

The Connect4Climate Global Leader program recently launched to recognize selected leaders of all ages, regions and professions, who represent Connect4Climate and its effort to raise climate change awareness and drive action around the world.

On May 3, 2014, Rokia Traoré performed at a national event in Italy, Cittadinanza in Festa, supported by Connect4Climate, where Rokia presented her latest album, Beautiful Africa. Cittadinanzattiva’s first National Day, Cittadinanza in Festa, was dedicated to finding innovative solutions to the world’s waste challenge. On this occasion, Rokia Traoré was formally recognized as a Connect4Climate Global Leader for her commitment and dedication to supporting climate change initiatives around the world.

“Rokia Traoré is one of Africa’s most innovative singers and songwriters. On behalf of Connect4Climate, we are delighted to welcome her as a Global Leader for our program. We admire her energy and determination to inspire action on climate change around the world. Her appearance at Cittadinanza in Festa is a unique opportunity for visitors to enjoy the extensive power of her voice and the complex variety of her music,” said Lucia Grenna, Connect4Climate's Program Manager.

En la fase previa a la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Desarrollo Sostenible Rio+20, Connect4Climate invita a la comunidad de C4C y los usuarios de medios sociales de todo el mundo a enviar contenidos que responden la pregunta: “Qué hacen ustedes para que sus vidas sean más sostenibles?” Quisiéramos ver y escuchar sus experiencias personales acerca de acciones locales que sean un ejemplo de una forma de vida más sostenible. Muéstranos que están haciendo USTEDES para realizar una vida más verde con una imagen, un video, una canción, un dibujo, una poesía, una obra de arte, todo vale! Every  morning  Semar, Luwam, Selam and Yohannes have a duty: bringing water from a well in a small Eritrean village to their houses 
These days, the kids have happy smiles on their faces as the well is full of water to the brim. To them it is also an opportunity to meet and play together with their friends. It is the end of the rainy season and although a bit late than usual, it has rained abundantly. Yet fear grows in the children’s hearts because they  feel  doubtful  about whether  there will  be usual rainfall in the years to come or not,  since the well hasn’t had  so  much water  in recent years for the lack of rain. The elderly  who  have  witnessed a changing world often say that rainfall was once abundant. Wells were always full, the surrounding environment was covered with forests and farming was   more productive. On the other hand, news coming from other countries in the Horn of Africa claims that people are starving  due to rain shortage,  which in time  may also affect our country, Eritrea. Once the containers and the buckets have been filled up , the children are back to their homes  happy  for their successful  achievement :  they were able to find water in the well but deep in their hearts  they foresee  a  life without water in their future…

The Easy Months of the Year – Mason Richard – Niger -

The Sahel in October is filled with smiles.  Here at 5 a.m., women from the town of Chadakori in the Maradi Region of Niger exalt the abundance of water in their wells and the fullness of the millet fields, ready for harvest.  In Niger, rainy season means the cultivation of millet and sorghum to provide the sustenance for the rest of the year, along with peanuts, beans, and corn.  The other nine dry months of the year bring trials and tribulations of many sorts.  Increasingly, dry seasons are lasting longer and longer into the year, traditional planting times are being abandoned, and chemical pesticides and fertilizers are being used ubiquitously.   Most women see their husbands and sons ride off into the distance in the backs of trucks, heading south to more moist regions to find work for seven, eight, or nine months.

Water Over Roadway – Chad Skeers – USA

Waves continue wearing away at beach-side communities in the Keta District of Ghana.  This road previously went to a town that has been all but washed away.  The damming of the Volta River keeps the sediment that once fed the coasts of Southeaster Ghana trapped in Lake Volta.  Without it, beaches and communities all along the coast continue to arose.

The Well – Maria de la Guardia – Bangladesh 
Two young girls on the island of Lamu, off Kenya's coast, pull water up from one of the many wells throughout the island. With almost constant hot and humid conditions, water is scarce here, and wells are slowly becoming contaminated by the salty Ocean as water levels rise.

Drought Being a Major Effect of Climate Change – Yussuf Abdi -  
Climate change has contributed to the spread of drought in the African countries, in particular the horn of Africa and Northern part of Kenya, where i live. Thousands of animals including goat, cattle, camel and wildlife succumbed to death. Thousands of children died millions remain malnourished while elderly people were not spared either. The photos explain the extent to which people search for drinking water for themselves and their animals.

Italian Minister of the Environment, Corrado Clini, visits Connect4Climate offices

The C4C team was thrilled to host Corrado Clini, Italian Minister for the Environment, Land and Sea at the World Bank headquarters at a special meeting on Monday, April 9. The Italian Ministry is one of the key donors that makes C4C’s work possible. Lucia Grenna, C4C’s Team Leader, gave a presentation on the progress the team has made in less than a year since the launch of the initiative, and both Cyril Muller, Vice President of External Affairs, and Andrew Steer, Special Envoy for Climate Change, spoke about C4C’s valuable contribution of creating a climate-conscious community and a space where local voices can be heard in the global climate conversation.

We were honored that Mr.Clini was able to pay us a personal visit, and we are empowered by our shared vision of not only raising awareness about climate issues, but also our quest to change hearts and minds around the world which will lead to concrete action to combat climate change.

TerrAfrica as Part of the Solutions

In Africa, land is our source of wealth, a source of life. But two-thirds of the continent is desert or drylands and nearly three-fourths of the land is degraded and exposed to a changing climate. This means hunger and poverty for 700 million people. Where will we find the land to feed the world? We need solutions, and we need them now.

TerrAfrica, an African driven initiative, is part of the solutions. This partnership addresses land degradation in Sub-Saharan Africa by supporting innovative solutions that sustain landscapes and increase countries resilience to a changing climate.

"The World Bank has supported the use of sustainable land and water management practices in Africa as they help deliver more secure livelihoods, economic growth, less hunger, adaptation and mitigation to climate change," said Magda Lovei, Sector manager in the World Bank Sustainable Development Network for the Africa region. "Our new President, Doctor Kim, has asked us 'What will it take to end poverty?' Well, ending land degradation would take as a big step toward that goal. We need to find and scale up solutions, and strengthen our partnerships like TerrAfrica to advance our shared goals of combating land degradation in Africa."

TerrAfrica has partnered with Connect4Climate on building a community, leading a campaign, and fostering a coalition that cares about climate change. Through this partnership, TerrAfrica leverages Connect4Climate's online community which provides a participatory, open knowledge platform to engage youth community in a climate change discussion. Together, TerrAfrica and Connect4Climate launched the Voices4Climate competition to invite young people to submit photos, videos, music videos, and podcasts that tell powerful climate change and sustainable land and water management stories. The Snap it. Sing it. Shoot it. Say it. Competition kick starts an interactive dialogue amongst African youth and gives them a voice in the global climate change conversation.

The two winners of the TerrAfrica Podcast category were invited by TerrAfrica to COP 18 in Doha where 190 nations met to find solutions to climate change issues. "The interaction we had with fellow journalists, the interviews conducted, and the plenary sessions attended broadened our horizons in covering climate change and environment issues within our countries and across the world," said Pilirani Tambala, one of the winners working for Zodiak Broadcasting System in Malawi. COP18 was also an opportunity to present the World Bank Drylands and Adaptation to Climate Change Agenda. The new the World Bank/GEF Sahel and West Africa Program in Support of the Great Green Wall is an example of initiative supported by TerrAfrica as it strengthens a country-driven vision for sustainable and climate-resilient development in 12 African countries.

In Africa, the integrated challenge of land degradation and climate risk requires an integrated solution. Sustainable land and water management practices have been proven at small scale, but are often neglected in national strategies due to the highly fragmented nature of land related institutions, lack of knowledge sharing, and minimal investments. Single sector approaches, isolated projects, and individual institutions cannot sufficiently address the multidisciplinary challenges posed by land degradation and climate change.

TerrAfrica partners like the World Bank have helped make durable progress by promoting country-led, multi-stakeholder coalitions that identify and promote good practices, harmonize policies, share knowledge, make domestic and international financing more efficient, and ultimately, strengthen the ability of land users, farmers and herders to individually and collectively reduce land degradation and climate risks.

A Climate Message from an iMatter Youth Council Member

Climate change is a serious issue that will affect the youngest generation most. It’s happening now, and it affects every single thing on Earth. In April 2011, tornados devastated Raleigh, destroying homes, cars, and roads. Luckily, my house didn’t get hit. But if you drove a few blocks down the street, almost every house had a blue tarp over the roof. Then, a year and a half later, Hurricane Sandy swept along the East coast, wreaking havoc in countless coastal towns and cities, even more violent than the 2012 tornadoes.

Increasingly violent storms are just one side effect of climate change. They hurt people and affect tourism and the economy. A 2010 report by the North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission said that the sea level along the coast will likely rise by about one meter by the end of this century, threatening up to 2,000 square miles of land. That’s a lot of North Carolina.

I have been concerned about climate change ever since I read the kids’ version of Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth when I was in third grade. I am only 10 years old, but this issue is really important to me. It will change the world I and my children will grow up in.

I joined the iMatter Youth Council of Kids vs Global Warming to make a difference. We are committed to raising the voices of the youngest generation to stand up for our futures and for our planet. KvGW and the iMYC are part of a group of organizations that are meeting with the White House to ask President Obama to take leadership on climate change by hosting a Presidential Summit on Climate Change, with linked-in community satellite meetings to focus on solutions.

We are also working to get local leaders involved. I recently met with Mayor Nancy McFarlane in Raleigh, NC, to ask her to support the proposed Presidential Summit. During my meeting, I told Mayor McFarlane about what the Climate Summit would be, how iMYC and I were involved in it, and the two things I wanted her to do. I showed her the list of other governors, mayors, and civic and business leaders who had already signed a letter of support. She was impressed by the length of the list! She thought it was cool that youth are involved, and she immediately agreed to sign her own version of a letter supporting the Summit.

I am really happy that my Mayor cares about my future and this issue. I hope that more mayors join the list and that other kids like me will make their voices heard. The youth of this nation need our leaders to stand up for us and to take action to protect our future from climate change!
