Since June 2020, #Youth4ClimateLive has brought the perspectives of young leaders from around the world to bear on some of the most pressing issues of the climate crisis. It’s been an amazing journey, and we’ve been thrilled at the sustained, enthusiastic engagement of everyone tuning in for each discussion. Now, some eight months later, we have only one episode left before we bring the series to a close and carry the momentum on to this September’s Youth4Climate: Driving Ambition event in Milan (Apply now!), the Pre-COP, and COP26. Let’s make “Driving Local Action” our biggest episode yet!
Scheduled for February 26 at 10:00 AM EST/4:00 PM CET, our ninth and final session will focus on strategies for implementing all the lessons we’ve learned so far from the Series—on climate change mitigation, adaptation, and resilience—on the ground in cities and smaller communities worldwide. Considering that international negotiations and national policies end up translating to action on the local level, it’s important to examine the different strategies being used in both rural and urban settings. Cities play a particularly integral role in achieving our climate goals—did you know that 55% of the global population now live in urban areas? Given that the UN’s Dept. of Economic and Social Affairs predicts this figure could swell to 70% by 2050, it behooves us to lay the groundwork for sustainable urban living today. And centuries’ worth of knowledge and practice in rural communities can inform our approaches to local action everywhere.

Joining us this episode to tackle the challenging question of how we can effectively green our communities even as we recover socially and economically from COVID-19 will be an intergenerational panel featuring the mayors of Milan, Italy and Recife, Brazil—two cities known for facing the climate crisis head-on—in conversation with #Youth4Climate leaders who have experience driving sustainable solutions and grassroots climate advocacy within their communities in Italy, Qatar, and Bangladesh.
We hope you’ll be able to join us for this exciting final session, and we’d appreciate your help getting the word out on social media in the run-up to the 26th. This may be the end of the #Youth4ClimateLive Series, but it’s just the beginning of a crucial year for climate ambition. Let’s work together to carry the energy we’ve built over the course of this Series forward to Youth4Climate: Driving Ambition, the Pre-COP, and COP26!
