The Climate Institute recently published the report “Sport & Climate Impacts: How much heat can sport handle?”.

The report focuses on how climate change and extreme weather events are influencing sports in Australia, in particular, rugby, tennis, cricket, cycling and winter snow sports. The findings combine case studies and testimonials from athletes and sport officials with multimedia materials, including infographics and podcasts.

Extreme heat, changes in rainfall patterns and more intense storms are increasingly affecting sporting events in Australia, which raises questions about how far athletes can be pushed, how different games are being played and watched, how top venues and local clubs are improving resilience to the weather, and how diverse heat policies are working across different sporting events.

“Climate change and extreme weather events threaten the viability of much of our sports as it’s currently played, either in the back yard, at local grounds, or in professional tournaments. Football, cricket, tennis, skiing, and more are struggling to adapt to, or prepare for, the impacts of climate change”

- John Connor, CEO of The Climate Institute.
