Jim Yong Kim's held a speech at the Connect4Climate Right Here Right Now event, March 1, 2013:
I’m here today deliver a very simple message: The World Bank is committed to tackling climate change. But more than anything else, we are committed to tackling climate change because it affects the people we care about most.
Just today I heard about a group of people in Mozambique who have been devastated by both drought and flooding. What we have to realize is that climate change is not a future threat. It is here with us today. Everywhere I go, I hear again, and again, and again, "It is here. It is with us."
At a meeting, the president of the Philippines said to everybody in the room, and it was a very distinguished group of people, “If any of you doubt the reality of climate change, just come to the Philippines. Our people are devastated. Cyclones that should have stopped in the early fall are now continuing throughout the year. Areas where there was too much water now are facing drought. Places that had droughts before, now are inundated with water.”
Connect4Climate is important because we have to take this struggle to a different level. We have been talking about the numbers: 98% of scientists agree we are going to see a 4 degrees Celsius world by the end of the century. We have said all of the numbers again, and again, and again. But what we have failed to do yet is actually connect.
Connect4Climate is about bringing in young people, bringing in artists, because we know that the numbers and the intellectual arguments have not been enough. For me, now that I have studied the problem in such great depth with the people on our team, it has become very personal.
In order to have any chance of keeping global warming to 2 degrees Celsius or less, the peak CO2 emission year would have to be 2016. When I heard that, I thought about my three year-old son, and my twelve year-old son too. But my three year-old son, by the time he is my age, he could be living in a world that would be unrecognizable today: extreme heat, extreme weather events every year, food fights, struggles over access to water, every single day. It would be a world that we don’t recognize, and I can just imagine my son living in that time, saying every day: “My father was the president of The World Bank. What did he do when he knew? When he knew that this was going to happen? When he knew that the peak CO2 emission year was 2016? What did he do when he knew?” Well, we have got to connect now in a very different way.
I am a medical doctor. We know a lot about how the brain works now. We know that if we just appeal to the pre-frontal cortex, our thinking brains, it's not going to lead to change. What we need is a social movement, a social movement that will finally and for once get serious about tackling this epidemic. In order to do it, we can not think about small-bore solutions anymore. My own sense is that every time these extreme weather events happen, the world looks to those of us who have responsibility for tackling climate change. They look to us, and they ask themselves: “OK, so are they serious with a solution that is big enough to tackle the challenge?” And I am afraid that every single time these events have happened, we have only been giving them small bore solutions.
We have got to get serious. We have got to connect on an emotional level, so that the young people here today know that they are going to be living in a time that is unrecognizable today. We have to listen to them. We have to listen to the scientists. But we have to connect. That is the whole purpose of Connect4Climate.
I’m so glad that young people and artists are engaging with us here at The World Bank, and can I assure you that every single day I come to work thinking, “My son is going to ask me what did I do when I knew.” What we are doing is Connect4Climate. What we want to do is create a stable price of carbon. We want to attack fuel subsidies. We want to find a way to build clean cities. We want to move on climate-smart agriculture. And there is so much more.
We are with you. Those of you who are here from the environmental world, we are with you. We are not going to stop. This is fundamentally about family values and it’s fundamentally about how much we care about the world we are leaving to our children. But even more importantly, I want you to understand that in the world today, especially in the poorest countries, this is a problem that is with us right now, today. We are doing well on disaster risk management. We are very proud of our work. Unfortunately, what we know is that is going to be a growth industry for us. There are going to be more and more disasters that we will have to help manage.

Es mi privilegio y honor dar la bienvenida al escenario a alguien que muchos están familiarizados con y si no lo están deben leer su biografía, pero creo que todos saben quién es, y quiero darle la bienvenida al Presidente del Banco Mundial, el Dr. Jim Yong Kim).
Hoy estoy aquí sólo para transmitir un mensaje muy simple: el Banco Mundial se ha comprometido abordar el cambio climático, pero más que nada, estamos comprometidos a enfrentar el cambio climático que afecta a las personas que nos preocupa más. Precisamente hoy me enteré de un grupo de personas en Mozambique, que han sido devastadas por la sequía y las inundaciones. Lo que tenemos que darnos cuenta es que el cambio climático no es una amenaza para el futuro: está aquí con nosotros hoy. Por todas partes voy, escucho otra vez y otra vez y otra vez: está aquí, está con nosotros.
En una reunión, el Presidente de Filipinas les dice a todos en la sala, a un grupo de personas muy distinguidas, que "si alguno de ustedes dudan de la realidad del cambio climático. Nuestra gente está devastada. Ciclones que deberían haber dejado en la primera caída, ahora continúan durante todo el año; áreas donde hubo demasiada agua, ahora se enfrentan la sequía; lugares que tenían sequías antes, ahora son inundados con agua."Connect4Climate es importante porque tenemos que llevar esta lucha a un nivel diferente.
Sabe usted, que hemos estado hablando con los números: 98% de los científicos están de acuerdo en que vamos a ver un mundo de 4 grados centígrados a finales de siglo. Hemos dicho todos los números y otra vez, repetidas veces. Pero lo que no aún hemos podido hacer es conectar realmente.
Connect4Climate es generar en los jóvenes un cambio, trayendo artistas, porque lo que sabemos es que los números, los argumentos intelectuales, no han sido suficientes. Para mí, ahora que he estudiado el problema en tan gran profundidad con las personas en nuestro equipo, se ha convertido muy personal. Sabes, cuando me enteré de que para tener cualquier posibilidad de mantener el calentamiento del planeta a 2 grados Celsius o menos, el año de emisión de CO2 de pico tendría que ser 2016, cuando me enteré pensé en mi hijo de tres años. Por el momento en mi edad, podría estar viviendo en un mundo que hoy sería irreconocible: calor extremo, extremos fenómenos meteorológicos, cada año; peleas de alimentos; luchas por el acceso al agua, todos los días.
Sería un mundo que no reconociéramos, y sólo puedo imaginar mi hijo viviendo en aquel momento, diciendo todos los días: "mi padre era el Presidente del Banco Mundial. ¿Qué hizo cuando supo? ¿Cuando sabía que esto iba a suceder? ¿Cuando él supo que el año de emisión de CO2 de pico era 2016? ¿Qué hizo cuando supo?" Bien, tenemos que conectar ahora de una manera muy diferente. Soy un médico, y sabemos mucho sobre cómo el cerebro funciona ahora. Y sabemos que si sólo hacemos un llamamiento a la corteza pre frontales, nuestros cerebros de pensamiento, no va a cambiar.
Lo que necesitamos es un movimiento social: un movimiento social que finalmente y por una vez conseguirá la solución sobre la lucha contra esta epidemia. Y para hacerlo, nosotros ya no podemos pensar en soluciones de pequeño calibre.
Mi sensación es que cada vez mas con el tiempo estos eventos suceden, el mundo espera que nosotros, quienes tienen la responsabilidad para enfrentar el cambio climático, nos miran y se preguntan: "Ok, Cual es la solución que es lo suficientemente grande como para enfrentar el desafío?". Y me temo que cada vez que estos acontecimientos han sucedido, hemos dado solo soluciones de pequeño calibre.
Tenemos que tomar en serio, tenemos que conectar a un nivel emocional, para que los jóvenes hoy en día sepan que van a estar viviendo en una época en la que hoy es irreconocible.
Tenemos que escucharlos, tenemos que escuchar a los científicos, pero tenemos que conectar: que es el propósito de Connect4Climate.
¡ Estoy tan contento que jóvenes y artistas están comprometidos con nosotros aquí en el Banco Mundial, y aseguro que todos los días vengan a trabajar pensando: "mi hijo va a preguntarme qué hizo cuando yo sabía".
Lo que estamos haciendo es conectarnos para el medio ambiente, lo que queremos hacer es crear un precio estable de carbono, quieren atentar contra subsidios a los combustibles, queremos encontrar una manera de construir ciudades limpias, queremos avanzar en agricultura climáticamente inteligente y hay mucho más. Estamos con ustedes, los de ustedes aquí desde el medio ambiente mundial, estamos con ustedes, y no vamos a parar. Esto es fundamentalmente sobre valores familiares y es fundamentalmente sobre cuánto nos preocupamos por el mundo que estamos dejando a nuestros hijos. Pero más importante aún, quiero que entienda en el mundo hoy en día, especialmente en los países más pobres, esto es un problema que está con nosotros ahora mismo, hoy. Lo que estamos haciendo bien en la gestión del riesgo de desastres, nos sentimos muy orgullosos de nuestro trabajo; Lamentablemente lo que sabemos es que va a ser una industria en crecimiento para nosotros. Va a ser más y más desastres que vamos a tener que afrontar. Conéctese con nosotros; por favor.
Por favor, conéctese con nosotros, por favor, dar a los jóvenes y los artistas hoy aquí su apoyo.
Por último, quiero dar las gracias al Gobierno de Italia por su apoyo visionario en este esfuerzo. Los italianos han estado haciendo mucho en esta área, se han tomado tan en serio y es nuestro brillante ejemplo de lo que todos los países tienen que hacer y lo que todos tenemos que hacer.
